Please us this checklist to ensure proper preparation for Outdoor Science School
Spring Sign UP:
- Talk with your principal to decide on the funding necessary for your school to attend. Coordinate and assist in fund raising, if necessary.
- Coordinate with school year calendar and arrange bus transportation.
3 Months prior to visit:
- Screen and select cabin leaders, and plan for an orientation meeting for all prospective cabin leaders.
- Focus on fitness- students who can run or walk a mile will enjoy their time outside at outdoor science school much better.
2 Months prior to visit:
- Track the number of students attending your outdoor school week. Your school is responsible for 80% of the number of students you signed up for during Spring Sign UP. Unless you call the county office to officially change your numbers at least 2 months prior.
- If you are sharing your experience with another school you have an option for to students to share cabins. Please let the outdoor school that you’re attending know what your preference is.
1 Month prior to visit:
- Cabin leader selected.
- All teachers attending have reviewed all information from the County Office:
- Nature’s Classroom
- Teacher responsibilities
- Discipline system
- Registration/health forms
- Bus transportation has been arranged:
- To arrive at Outdoor Science School at 10:30 a.m. on Monday
- To arrive at Outdoor Science School at 10:15 a.m. on Friday
- Start to reference the pre- lesion to prepare students for Outdoor Science School.
2 weeks prior to visit:
- Call Outdoor Science School with count of male students, female students, cabin leaders and teachers attending.
- Have a meeting with cabin leaders to review handbook. If possible, have cabin leaders meet students.
- Make sure they are all still committed to the week.
- It is a good idea to have backups.
- Type a list of your cabin leader’s names.
- Make sure all cabin leaders have completed health form.
1 Week prior to visit:
- Check health forms
- Two signatures required, plus an additional physician’s signature for the Request for Medication form.
- Everyone must have a health form, including cabin leaders, and teachers.
- Note any diet problems and consult outdoor school.
- Clearly mark medical problems on upper right hand corner of Medical form.
- Arrange medical forms in alphabetical order.
- Cabin grouping
- As soon as the male/female breakdown for the week is known, the Outdoor Science Principal will give you a number of students to place in each group.
- Arrange students into compatible groups
- Type this list and mail, fax or send via email to the Outdoor Science School

- If any cabin leaders have a preference in which cabin/students they will be assigned to.
- Discuss current weather conditions at Outdoor Science School with students and make sure everyone attending will have adequate clothing.
- Call in final count of students by Friday morning.
- If your school is sending visitors who would like meals, inform the Outdoor Science School ahead of time.
Monday morning before departure:
- Count the students. Note any absences on typed cabin grouping list.
- Bring list of cabin leader names.
- Double check that everyone under 18(including cabin leaders) has a health form that is signed in two places. Health forms should be in alphabetical order.
- Collect all medications in student’s possession.
- Collect any prohibited items.
- Make sure everyone has all essential items (clothes, sleeping bags).
