Subbing for LACOSS

We often have a need for substitute outdoor science teachers throughout the year. People get sick, or just want a week off. Occasionally they can't complete the school year for some reason. And sometimes we just have really big groups of students and need extra help. Usually we need subs to work for a full week, though sometimes it's only for a day or two. Please be aware that this is nowhere near a full time position. Our need for subs is usually sporadic and unpredictable. You might work for three weeks one month, not at all the next, and only a couple of days the one after that.

The qualifications to be a sub are basically the same as the qualifications for the full-time position. Substitutes are typically folks who have previously worked as an outdoor science teacher or naturalist at an outdoor school. We don't really have a lot of time to train subs, so we need to have folks who can jump in without much direction. Classroom science teachers or subs, and museum or nature center docents might also be great subs. Basically we want folks with good science knowledge and some teaching experience. Subs are paid a rate equal to Step 1 of our salary schedule, which means $495 per week, or $99 per day. We also provide room and board, and a mileage stipend to help offset your cost of driving to the school site.

If you live near Southern California, have some free time, and are looking to pick up some extra money, this may be a great option for you and a big help to us. If you are interested in subbing, please contact each of the site directors by phone or email.
