JOB PERIOD

Spring: February 22 - May 21, 2010 (12 weeks)
Fall: October 4 - December 17, 2010 (10 weeks)

LOCATION

Currently, intern positions are only available at our Malibu location.

STIPEND

$100/week. Room and board provided during the weeks of operation. Room provided on weekends. First Aid/CPR certification, and other perks.

DUTIES

Working closely with the site director and the outdoor science teachers, the intern will gain knowledge and understanding of the inner workings of an outdoor science school, as well as gain skills and training to become an effective outdoor science teacher. The internship is designed to provide a concrete foundation for pursuing a career in outdoor education to people with a good science background, but limited teaching experience. Through observation, inservices, team teaching, personal research, and independent teaching, the intern will gain experience in areas such as curriculum and lesson design, group management, fundamental teaching techniques, and the administrative aspects of running an outdoor education program. Interns will be paired with outdoor science teachers and will assist with teaching, night programs, and student supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS

Undergraduates (preferably seniors) or graduates with degrees in life sciences, natural resources, environmental sciences, or relevant physical sciences are encouraged to apply. The internship is designed for those interested in pursuing a career in outdoor science teaching. Interns must be physically able to lead teaching hikes in a semi-wilderness setting. Applicants should possess the desire and ability to deal patiently and constructively with children and teens. Good personal and group communication skills are necessary. Ability to sing and/or play musical instruments is a plus. Must have a negative TB test and pass a criminal background check.
