Working for LACOSS

Thanks for your interest in working for the Los Angeles County Outdoor Science School. We are now accepting applications for the 2010/2011 school year. It's still a little early to know how many positions will be available, but we typically have at least one or two openings at each of our sites. We are also accepting applications for the fall internship at Malibu. Or, if you are local to the LA area, perhaps you might be interested in subbing for us.

Why work for LACOSS?

  • Gorgeous Locations - You may think of Los Angeles only as a place of smog and urban sprawl, but it is much more. The reason LA is smoggy is because it's surrounded by some amazing mountain ranges. Each of our Outdoor Science Schools are located away from the city in those mountains or along the coast right on the beach.
  • Weekend Play - We do not operate on the weekends, and quit early on Fridays. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the wonderful recreational opportunities Southern California has to offer. One of our sites is just a few miles from several ski areas, and the other is across the street from a surfing beach. Both are close to great hiking and mountain biking. World class climbing, skiing, or other outdoor adventures are just a few hours away in the Sierra Nevada Mountains or the Mojave Desert.
  • High Pay - We pay more than most outdoor schools so we can recruit the best of the best.
  • Consistent Salary - You get paid the same amount each pay period, regardless of whether it includes a short week or a holiday. Some programs may advertise a higher rate, but after you subtract the days when you don't get paid, the higher rate isn't quite as attractive. At LACOSS, you are a salaried professional, not an hourly employee.
  • Paid Vacations - Full year staff receive 21 days of paid vacation.
  • Medical and Dental Benefits - No need to cross your fingers and hope you don't get sick.
  • 40 Hour Work Week - We don't expect you to work 60 to 80 hours per week or sleep in a cabin with students. You can teach in the outdoors and still have a life outside of work.
  • Paid Professional Development - Perhaps you want to go to a CSTA, AEOE, or NAAEE conference. We will pay you to attend them, or to participate in other workshops, seminars, or training.
  • Strong Science Focus - Maybe you are tired of teaching pioneer living, or belaying kids on the ropes course ... again. Or maybe you just want to spend more time in natural ecosystems and teach more science. LACOSS is a place where that is encouraged and expected.

Our typical hiring period for the following school year is from March through early June. If you are reading this after June, that's OK. We are always looking for qualified people and accept applications throughout the year. Applicants who miss our June closing date would be considered for positions that might open up unexpectedly midyear. They are also kept on file for the following school year.

If you are interested in applying for one of our positions, we hope you will find the information on this web site valuable and informative. We would like to introduce you to our program, our sites, and to answer any questions you may have about becoming a LACOSS employee. If you have questions not answered here, please don't hesitate to contact us by phone or email.

Summer Work: At our Blue Sky Meadow site, we operate a science-oriented summer camp program. This creates an opportunity for summer employment. Hiring for summer is totally separate from the hiring of Outdoor Science Teachers, though it is possible to do both. If you are interested in summer employment, please contact Blue Sky Meadow directly.
