Duties of an Outdoor Science Teacher

The primary responsibility of an outdoor science teacher is effectively teaching ecosystem science concepts to a group of 10-20 students using experiential teaching techniques within natural ecosystems.

Since this is a residential program, there are other responsibilities which complement the teaching time. In a typical week, an outdoor science teacher might coordinate the dining hall experience for one or two meals. They might have an hour or so of student supervision time. And they would work one or two evening activities. Other duties essential to the smooth operation of the school may be assigned. All responsibilities are scheduled to be completed within a 40 hour work week. Once every eight weeks, each outdoor science teacher would be relieved of their teaching duties and would be responsible for training and supervising the volunteer cabin leaders.

Below is a sample schedule for an outdoor science teacher. Your actual work schedule would vary depending on the site, the week, and which schedule set is being used. This is just meant to give you a rough idea of what a typical work week might look like.
