Shaun Headshot

Shaun Hawke loves working at beautiful Blue Sky Meadow.  She is in charge of programs at Blue Sky Meadow on the weekends and times when the regular outdoor science school is not in session. Shaun grew up in west Los Angeles, but earned her Bachelor's degree, as well as a graduate certificate in education, from the University of California, Santa Cruz.  She also has training as an Emergency Medical Technician.  She taught for Santa Clara County's outdoor science program and for National Audubon’s Camp in the Rockies. She was with L.A. County Outdoor Science Schools for 18 years. Shaun likes riddles, looking at the stars and kids who remember to be kind to others.

RT Headshot

RT Hawke keeps track of our plants and animals here at Blue Sky Meadow, along with being a naturalist.  He graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Natural History.  RT has taught for the L.A. County Outdoor Science School for 23 years.  He migrated to Blue Sky Meadow from the LACOSS Wrightwood site, where he spent 15 years.  He has also taught for Santa Clara and Monterey counties’ programs, National Audubon’s Camp in the Rockies, as well as Victor Valley College.  He loves plants, birds, rocks, traveling and playing bridge.

Abbey Headshot

Abbey Kostura was born in Morgantown, West Virginia and raised in Masontown, Pennsylvania.  She is a graduate of Chatham College located Pittsburgh, PA (Go Steelers).  Abbey graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science and a minor in Psychology.  She recently earned her teaching credential from the University of Redlands.  Abbey enjoys backpacking, running, juggling, learning and anything else that gives her an excuse to be outside.  Abbey is super excited to be here for her 4th year at Blue Sky Meadow.

Brian Headshot

Brian Collins grew up in Northern Virginia just outside of Washington D.C. where suburban sprawl encroached on most open space. Noticing that open space was far more appealing then cookie-cutter homes, Brian became interested in exploring the natural world in more detail. Brian has a degree in Environmental Science from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He is interested in learning more about the wonders of Southern California and looks forward to teaching in such an amazing environment.

Emily Headshot

Emily Voltz grew up on a farm in rural Minnesota. After teaching for several years throughout the Midwest she finally earned her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Education. This is Emily’s fourth year with LACOSS and her first year at Blue Sky Meadow. She is super excited about teaching at a new site. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, cooking delicious meals in her crock-pot, and canoeing.

Leanne Headshot

Leanne DeCraene grew up in the Great Lake State of Michigan!  She fostered her love of the outdoors through annual camping trips and adventures with her friends and family.  After receiving her degree in Oceanography/Marine Biology she worked in several amazing ecosystems on each coast until settling in southern California where she has been with LACOSS for four years.  This will be her first year with Blue Sky Meadow and she is thrilled to be working with other new ecosystems.  In her free time, she enjoys camping, climbing, running, and enjoying the great outdoors.

Colin Headshot

Colin Doyle is originally from Massachusetts, but has lived in a number of states, West and Southern Africa, Europe, and indigenous South America.  He has degrees in anthropology and religion.  During the summer he leads hiking-based trips with teenagers in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  He has been with LACOSS since January 2009, and is looking forward to getting more children connected to the outdoors and to exploring the semi-mythical region that is Southern California.

Chris Headshot
Chris Demers comes from the beautiful state of Michigan. He graduated from Western Michigan University with a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Political Science. This is his second year at LACOSS and when not taking kids out for a hike, he enjoys surfing, skiing, snowboarding, and music.
Susan Headshot

Susan Michler grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  After earning her bachelor’s degree in Biology, she found her niche in outdoor and environmental education.  Susan has lived and worked in many other states since leaving the great Penn’s Woods, before finally settling down in California.  This is Susan’s second year at Blue Sky Meadow and she is excited to be teaching again.  In her free time, she enjoys gazing at the stars, walking under deciduous trees, and snowboarding.

Gus Headshot
Gus Rodriquez (Maintenance) grew up in Guatemala City and enjoyed traveling throughout the Central American and South Mexican rainforests. After earning a degree at Mexico State University, he moved back to Central America to work for Schlumberger Oil Exploration participating in several oil engineering projects. Then, he moved to Southern California to work for several building maintenance companies. For the past three years, Gus has been working for Blue Sky Meadow as the most wonderful maintenance man ever! He keeps the site running by using his abilities – that surpass most – in regard to generators, snow plows, water pumps and much more. When away from Blue Sky Meadow, Gus enjoys spending time with his family, playing soccer and racquetball as well as listening to music. If you see Gus around campus, make sure to give him a huge “thank you” for all of his hard work.

Woodsy Headshot
Woodsy, a great horned owl, is often asked, are you real? Well, yes...he is real, but no longer alive. He was fatally injured by a car, found, and with the help of the Audubon Society's Vivian Null Fund and the San Bernardino County Museum, was taxidermied. Now he resides with us at Blue Sky Meadow. He loves to help teach students about nocturnal animals. He has family living out in the forest. You may hear them hunting and hooting around the meadow on your night hike. (Woodsy would love to answer emails and letters, but can really only respond, "Who?")
