Frequently Asked Teacher Questions
1. What preparations do I need to make before the trip?
For a comprehensive list, you may visit the teacher information section of the LACOSS site.
2. What do I need to bring?
For your group you will need to bring water bottles(1 per student. 1/2 liter disposable variety is sufficient) and pencils (1 per student). For your personal packing, look at the student packing list. In addition, you may want to bring an alarm clock (cell phones don't work well as alarm clocks here) and a flashlight.
3. How should I organize rosters and paperwork?
Upon arrival, you should have a finalized list of attending students and cabin leaders, as well as health forms (alphabetized by last name is helpful). We encourage you to use our Excel roster template. This customized Excel template is what we use to record and organize your students names into cabin groups, naturalist groups, infirmary lists, etc. It’s a useful tool for you (it contains instructions on how to organize cabin groups) and it saves BSM staff time on Mondays.
4. What will we be eating?
Take a peak at our weekly sample menu. If you have any major dietary restrictions (e.g. diabetic, vegan), it is prudent to contact BSM prior to your session to see if we can accommodate you. Teachers are welcome to bring their own food.
5. Will I be able to contact the outside world?
Cellular phone coverage at BSM is spotty at best, however, BSM's land line is available for school-related calls. Currently, Sprint is the only cell phone service available at BSM. A Sprint card or hot spot can keep you connected for the week.
